How often should I visit the dentist?

Your individual oral health needs will determine how often you need a dental exam. Additionally, if you haven’t seen a dentist in quite some time, there may be an extra visit or two needed to get your oral health back on track. It is best to catch any small problems or cavities early to prevent further damage so for many people this means seeing a dentist every 6 months or so.

Do I need x-rays at each visit?

How often you need to have x-rays also depends on your oral health. If you have not had any oral issues for several years, you likely won’t need x-rays at every appointment. Typically, when you visit for the first time, we will take x-rays to have a better idea of your oral health. If you have been experiencing a lot of cavities, decay, or gum disease, we may want to monitor your progress which may require more frequent x-rays.

Remember that dental x-rays deliver very little radiation; they are a vital tool for your dentist to ensure that small problems don’t develop into bigger ones.

How do I brush and floss properly?

Brushing: Brush your teeth softly while being cautious of where your gums and teeth meet. Brushing too hard can cause gum loss.  Be sure to clean every surface of every tooth and use the tip of your brush to clean behind your upper and lower front teeth.

Flossing: Take a piece of floss about the length of your elbow to your fingers and wrap it around your middle fingers.  Wrap the floss into a C shape around a tooth and wipe it over the tooth, from base to tip, a couple of times. Repeat on each tooth and be sure to use a clean section of floss each time.

How does gum disease get started?

Gum disease starts when plaque forms around and below the visible edge of your gums. If the plaque is not removed every day by brushing and flossing, it eventually hardens into tartar which starts a bacterial infection. The early stages of gum disease are called gingivitis.

You may not notice anything in the early stages but as the gum disease gets more serious you may see tiny pockets of infection starting to form. Eventually, the infection destroys the gum tissue and you become at risk of losing teeth.

How do I choose the right dentist?

Choosing a dentist that is right for you and your family is important. Often you should be able to determine after your first visit if a dentist is right for you.

During your initial appointment, consider the following:

  • Is the appointment schedule convenient?
  • Was your appointment on time or did you have to wait long?
  • Is the office easy to get to and convenient for you?
  • Does the office appear to be clean?
  • Was your medical and dental history recorded and placed in a permanent file?
  • Did the dentist explain techniques for good oral health?
